It is believed that the Miniature Schnauzer is a cross of the larger Standard Schnauzer and either the Affenpinsher, Miniature Pinscher or Poodle breed. The Miniature Schnauzer originated in Germany. The name “Schnauzer” actually comes from the German work “Schnauze” which means “muzzle”. This is probably because the Miniature Schnauzer has a very distinct muzzle. Their original duty was to catch mice and rats on German farmyards. They are a very lively breed that requires a lot of attention from their owner, and a lack of can cause them to become depressed. They should also receive plenty of regular exercise to keep them physically fit, as they are prone to easy weight gain.

This breed loves to spend time with its owner. This breed is generally good with children and strangers, but tends to be aggressive towards other dog breeds. Because they are quite small in size, this can be a dangerous quality since they will often try to take on breeds much larger then themselves. Because of their aggressive tendencies towards other dogs, this breed should be well socialized from a young age to try to keep this quality under control. The Miniature Schnauzer barks quite a bit, so this should be considered when adopting this breed. This attribute does, however, make them excellent watchdogs.

The Miniature Schnauzer has a wiry coat and sheds very little, making it a good choice for allergy sufferers. The coat is relatively low-maintenance but should be brushed regularly to avoid matting. They should also be clipped 2 times a year which can be a difficult task; therefore it is recommended that it is done by a professional groomer. Their nails also need regular trimming, and it is recommended that their teeth are brushed to prevent future dental problems.
